About Toorji Ka Jhalra:

Built in 1740, Toorji Ka Jhalra is commonly known as the stepwell of Jodhpur. Which is one of the few remaining structures depicting the traditional water management systems of Jodhpur. This architectural wonder was built by the queen-consort of Maharaja Abhay Singh, a nod to the region’s age-old tradition where royal women supervised public water works. Let us tell you that this 250-year-old structure was built using the famous rose-red sandstone found in Jodhpur. The impressive design of Toorji Ka Jhalra attracts many tourists and is considered a fun place in Jodhpur for locals and tourists to engage in recreational water sports to beat the heat.

History of Toorji Ka Jhalra:

According to history, Jakanwar Tuvarji Rani, the queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh of Jodhpur, had built Jhalra in the year 1740, due to which it was named Turji Ka Jhalra. Jhalare water was mainly used by women. Because fetching and collecting water was the job of women only, this Jhalra has been submerged in deep water for decades. The restoration has revealed a 200-foot-deep unique heritage. This Ghatu of Jodhpur is made by carving red stone. It has fine captivating carvings of gracefully dancing elephants, medieval lions and cows, the main sources of water being taps.

Architecture of Toorji Ka Jhalra:

The artistry of the stepwell has been done excellently showing perfection in engineering. Cow and lion-shaped water reservoirs were carved to provide drainage. The stairs leading to the water level are beautifully designed, with some sculptures of gods and goddesses in between. Viewing galleries also known as Jharoka are built around steps used to place lamps to illuminate the place at night. These are now used by the local people as a platform for deep diving into the water. The technology of Persian wheels was used to raise the water to a higher level. A pair of oxen would turn those wheels from the upper platform and the water would then rise to two different levels.
