About Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park:

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park spans 72 hectares and is located near the historic Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The park has been restored to its natural state, featuring desert and dry land vegetation. Established in 2006, the park aimed to restore the ecological balance of a large rocky area below the fort. It was opened to the public in February 2011. The park boasts unique volcanic rock and sandstone formations. Visitors can explore the park’s visitor center, which includes an interpretation gallery, a native plant nursery, a small shop, and a café. There are four trails available for tourists, ranging from approximately 880 to 1115 meters in length. Trained guides and naturalists are also present to assist visitors.

Jodhpur Welded Tuff National Geological Monument

The Jodhpur Welded Tuff has been designated as a National Geological Monument of India by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). This recognition is due to its importance in terms of conservation, maintenance, promotion, and the development of geo-tourism. The volcanic rocks found in the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park were formed around 745 to 680 million years ago. These volcanic formations consist mainly of rhyolite, along with welded tuff and, in certain areas, breccia.

Within the park, there is a drain that was once used as an aqueduct or canal to carry rainwater from the northern catchment area to Padmasar Lake at the base of the fort. This drain provides a visible display of the breccia rock formation. Additionally, rocks of various sizes, ranging from large to intermediate crystal sizes, as well as fine-textured tuff and large-grained (porphyritic) rhyolite, have been observed in the area.
