About Mandore Garden

Mandore is a suburb Historical town located 9 km north of Jodhpur city, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Mandore is an ancient city that served as the seat of the Pratiharas of Mandavyapur, who ruled the region in the 6th century AD. Even after the Gurjara-Pratihara empire disintegrated, a Pratihara family continued to govern Mandore. In 1389, the Pratihara dynasty appointed Rao Hema Gehlot as the chief of Mandore. Rao Hema Gehlot formed an alliance with Rao Chunda, the chief of the Rathore, to protect their territories from the Tughlaq dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. Rao Chunda married the Pratihara princess of Mandore, and Rao Hema Gehlot crowned Rao Chunda as the ruler. Rao Chunda received the Mandore fort as a dowry as part of the marriage. The fort served as the capital for his family until 1459 AD, when Rao Jodha relocated it to the newly-founded city of Jodhpur.

History of  Mandore Garden

Rao Ranmal Rathore ascended the throne of Mandore in 1427. Apart from ruling Mandore, Rao Ranmal also became the administrator of Mewar to assist Maharana Mokal (father of Rana Kumbha). After the assassination of Maharana Mokal in 1433, Ranmal continued as the administrator of Mewar in favor of Rana Kumbha. In 1438, Rana Kumbha decided to end the power-sharing system and assassinated Rao Ranmal in Chittor and captured Mandore. Rao Jodha, son of Rao Ranmal, fled towards Marwar. Rao Jodha was accompanied by about 700 horsemen while fleeing from Chittor. The battle near Chittor and the bold attempt to stop the pursuers at Someshwar Pass resulted in heavy losses for Jodha’s warriors. 

When Jodha went to Mandore, there were only seven people with him. Jodha gathered so much strength, left Mandore and moved towards Janglu. Jodha barely managed to reach Kahuni (near the present-day village) in a safe position. For 15 years Jodha tried in vain to recapture Mandore. Jodha’s opportunity to attack finally came in 1453 when Rana Kumbha faced simultaneous attacks by the Sultans of Malwa and Gujarat. Jodha suddenly attacked Mandore. Jodha’s forces defeated the defenders and captured Mandore with relative ease. Jodha and Kumbha eventually resolved their differences to face their common enemies, the rulers of Malwa and Gujarat.

Mandore was the capital of the erstwhile Marwar princely state (Jodhpur State), before Rao Jodha moved it to Jodhpur, where he built Mehrangarh. Mandore remained as a royal cremation ground, where shrines of all the kings of Marwar from Maharaja Takht Singh were built. Since Maharaja Jaswant Singh-II, Jaswant Thada became the royal cremation ground. Mandore is known as the city of military Kshatriyas or Mandorava Rajputs. The major Mandorwa Rajputs are Gehlot (Sisodia), Rathod, Parihar (Pratihar), Tanwar, Solanki, Sankhla, Deora, Chauhan, Tak, Bhati, Panwar and Parmar. Most notable Mandorwa Rajputs- • Rao Hema Gehlot
